Announcing the CedarDB Community Edition

Almost a year ago, we launched our company with our “Ode to Postgres”, with the goal of making the fruits of the highly successful Umbra research project available to you and everyone else. Umbra was created to incorporate all the lessons learned from the first 40 years of database systems into a new system built from the ground up to take advantage of modern hardware such as multi-core CPUs, fast SSDs, and cloud storage.

With CedarDB, we took our research on Umbra and turned it into an enterprise-grade database system. Unlike other systems that hyper-optimize one workload or improve individual components of otherwise aging database systems, CedarDB is built from the ground up to be a modern and versatile all-in-one solution for data processing. A system with the performance to meet today’s challenges, without sacrificing performance for one workload in favor of another, is only possible by rethinking every component of a database system. While CedarDB represents this fresh start, it does not require new tools or query languages and can be accessed through the familiar PostgreSQL-compatible interface.

Today we are excited to finally share our work with the public and announce CedarDB Community Edition.

Community Edition

CedarDB Community edition is our way to make our work accessible to everyone, no strings attached. It is free to use, requires no sign up, and delivers the full power of CedarDB on any machine. With the CedarDB Community Edition, you get a no strings attached database system for your everyday needs that is:

  • Fast
    • CedarDB is the fastest database system for everything from small writes and point accesses to analytical queries with thousands of joins across billions of rows. This is evidenced by CedarDB’s top scores in popular benchmarks such as ClickBench, TPC-H and the CH-Benchmark.
  • Familiar
    • CedarDB is built to be compatible with what is, by far, most popular database ecosystem, the PostgreSQL ecosystem. Check our current and ever-expanding compatibility in our docs.
  • Easy to Deploy
    • Running a database system does not have to be hard. You can get CedarDB up and running in seconds, either locally or in the cloud, using a Docker image or installation script. CedarDB automatically adapts to your hardware, so there is no need to manually tune it to your environment.
  • Fully Transactional
    • CedarDB is not only blazingly fast for complex analytics, it also offers full ACID guarantees, whether you are touching a single tuple or billions of them.
  • Free Forever
    • CedarDB Community Edition is free for everyone forever, with no strings attached. Just download it and get started right away.

CedarDB Community Edition is the right choice for everything from ambitious solo projects to small production workloads up to 64GB of compressed tuple data.

Enterprise Edition

For those looking to use CedarDB to handle heavy production workloads, we are launching CedarDB Enterprise Edition. The Enterprise Edition includes all the powerful features of the Community Edition, plus:

  • Unlimited Tuple Storage
    • Analyze all your data in CedarDB with no data size limitations.
  • Premium Support
    • Get priority support for CedarDB, report your issues privately and get access to Slack Connect Channels.
  • More To Come
    • Profit from upcoming features that will be exclusive to the Enterprise Edition. These features include support for high availability, advanced instance monitoring, native PostgreSQL replication to CedarDB, and scaling your data to cloud services like S3. We will start rolling out these features over the next few months.

If you are unsure if the Enterprise Edition is right for you, you can feel the unrestricted power of CedarDB in our 90-day trial. No credit card required! In case you want to use CedarDB Enterprise Edition right away, don’t hesitate to reach out!

New Partners

Building an entire database system from scratch is no easy feat. When we started out a year ago, we began with just the German EXIST start-up grant. Since then, the company has matured. We have grown from five founders in university-provided start-up offices to twice that number in our own office in Munich and our first employee in the US. We have also laid the groundwork for further growth and brought additional help on board.

We are thrilled to announce that we have secured a € 5.3 million seed investment from Amplify Partners, with participation from several outstanding angel investors!

We are excited to be working with Amplify. We believe they are the best investor in the data infrastructure space for a young startup like ours. We have known Amplify partners Sarah Catanzaro and Lenny Pruss for a long time. Their experience in the data infrastructure space will help us realize our ambition to demonstrate how our revolutionary database system can overcome decades-old data processing barriers.

With our seed round, we also gained the support of several great angel investors: Chris Bach, Hanno Renner, Ioannis Papapanagiotou, Jens Krüger, Jonathan Sanders, Jordan Tigani, Rob Benson, and Wes McKinney! You can find a full list of our supporters here.

What’s Next

While we have accomplished a lot in the past year, we are not slowing down. Much of the development over the past year has focused on features under the hood of CedarDB that are not directly visible to our users. However, we have also been working on exciting user-visible features that will be rolled out in the coming months.

In addition to further extending PostgreSQL compatibility and usability for CedarDB, these include scaling storage to cloud object stores such as S3, support for new file types such as Parquet, and improved monitoring support.

We are also working to support the most demanding workloads and environments with high availability, PostgreSQL-native replication to CedarDB, and efficient spooling for your most complex queries on small machines. To stay informed about our progress, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter.

We are incredibly proud to finally share CedarDB with the public, so jump in below and let us know what you think!
